The series “Born at Home” takes place over the course of a 12 hour time period, beginning at 7pm on February 14th, 2015. The room was lit with only a lamp, some candles and a flashlight. This series documents a natural, midwife assisted home birth. As a mother and photographer, I was able to experience birthing from a completely new perspective while documenting this baby’s arrival earth side. I saw how the human body instinctively transforms and prepares itself to deliver the baby. I witnessed stillness and focus in a laboring mother. A midwife, whose quiet and calming presence, provided encouragement instead of intervention. An exhausted father, who had been earlier tending to his other young children, remained a constant and stable presence, never leaving the mother’s side.
